April 1: Muizenberg

After a good breakfast, I spent time sorting out future travel plans, as they will get more complex in the near future, with the transition to three countries, and then back to India!! I got a call from my friend, Clive Mott, who I worked with as a teacher in Bloemfontein at St. Andrew's School. He is still there....we were at Rhodes together too, and we go back a long time! I took the train to Fish Hoek, which is all of a 10 minute train journey, and met him at the station. We picked up our friendship like it was yesterday! He took me along the sea walk, which is continuous even from Muizenberg. It was good weather, and good exercise. We walked and talked about our former experiences and people we knew, and how the school had changed over the years. There is a place called Dixies on the beach, and we stopped there for lunch. On our return, it rained for quite a while, but we trudged on. He showed me his family home, and a lovely beach apartment that he rents out to visitors. Then we had a coffee to warm up at another seaside cafe on the gorgeous Fish Hoek beach, and I said goodbye and got on the train back to Muizenberg. Instead of going back to the B & B I remembered that the owner had said the Farmer's Market was only open on Friday, so I went. There really wasn't much produce for sale, except some lovely flowers ( Proteas) but all the locals were gathered there in the middle of a huge hall. Around the edge were many food stalls, and I was amazed at the quality of food, very very reasonably priced, and lovely local delicacies like melk tert which I bought and consumed. I also tried potjie, which is local stew. I tried Kudu and Guiness potjie....totally amazed that this was offered. Some of the foods were gourmet. There was a local bar too. I sat and ate with the locals, and returned home to read, and have a quiet evening. Thanks for checking in!!
Above and below: Fish Hoek...lovely beach
There are sharks along this coast, and we saw the shark nets. Shark spotters are located higher up the mountain to warn swimmers and surfers and a system of coloured flags is used and a siren in case of a shark being spotted.

Below: the familiar pink Proteas are gorgeous.
 White proteas and also lovely!
