Breakfast at 7 AM with the monkeys. The African lady watched us as the monkeys tried to steal food. One on the thatched roof, and all over wooden railings, trees etc. The breakfast was outside, beside a little pond area. After breakfast we set off with Patrick for Kruger all day. It was a 35 minute drive in our safari jeep, raised seats, and canopy. Once at Orpen Gate we came across a herd of elephants that decided to cross the road. Further on a herd of buffalo did the same. We saw herds of impala ( small buck) they are all over Kruger . We saw zebra, and close up, and giraffe very close up. We were nearly charged by a mother elephant who was protecting her baby. I have a good pic of her flapping her big ears. After lunch we were told of a lion kill, and found it. The lion was under a thorn bush guarding it. A hippo carcass was close by, and looked fairly gutted. With drought the poor hippo must have been very weak, and was easy prey for the lion. We also saw a pride of lion, some distance away, across the river, but male and female were clearly distinguishable. All game nearby was on high alert. The lions were waiting for dusk, when other animals come to drink at the river. At lunch I took a pic of a glossy starling, and it came out well. I also took a very very close pic of a Nyala male and female who were browsing in our camp, and were not afraid. Great dinner. I am with 5 other Canadians......I am the only omnivore, but plan on being vegetarian on return!!
